P
ortola Country Club Ladies' Golf Club's -- PCCLGA -- membership roster exceeds 100.  Each Wednesday is designated as Ladies' Day.  During the season -- November to April -- the first Wednesday monthly is scramble play.  The monthly business meeting and luncheon follow competition.

A Sign-Up sheet for every week is posted in the Pro-shop with deadline for signing up by 10 a.m. on Tuesdays.  A golf fee of $2 for each player is used for weekly prize money.  Tantalizing, yummy foods are provided on a rotating basis by club members.

Membership dues are $25 the first year, which includes cost of a name tag, and $20 annually thereafter.  All residents are invited; newcomers, don't be shy since you'll be treated like one of the gang right from the start.

Portola C.C. is associated with "Catcus Cats," a local ladies' golf group from six area country clubs.  Membership for "Catcus Cats" is a modest $5 yearly fee. This entitles players to participate in monthly tournaments at the six clubs, with Portola hosting the event in February (2004).  Tournament fee is usually $30.  This is a great opportunity for our members to play other courses, have a delicious lunch, and -- if lucky -- take home a neat prize.

For new members establishing a handicap, a "Buddy System" of members who have signed up to play with them and attest cards to establish temporary handicap is available. Contact Glenda Ragan to obtain more details.

Bocce

The Bocce season league play starts in January. This is a great way to meet your neighbors, two at a time. Four nicely manicured lawn Bocce courts are located next to the Azurite pool.  League play starts every January with two people making up each team.  This is an ages-old game that originated in Italy then quickly spread in popularity to other countries; it is similar to bowling but without the pins.  Slow-paced, yet never boring.  Contact Frank Scheel for more details.

Tennis - Pickle Ball

Tennis and pickle ball courts are conveniently located within Portola Country Club. If interested in playing with the group,  come on down.  Pickleball normally plays Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9am. Singles and doubles recreational play to be scheduled depending upon the response. Portola residents and their guests receive first priority with outside players being utilized to fill in as required. Doubles play is usually a round-robin format . . . that is, three sets are played, each with a different partner. Keep fit with a fun activity that provides healthy exercise.

No fees whatsoever, so lace up the tennies, slap on some sunscreen, grab a racket, and bring your best game.  Everyone is welcome!
